Encouraging Women in Business
By Helena Johnson
A UK Mumpreneur encourages women at home to get into business, while she celebrates her continued growth in the online gifts business, despite the recession. She puts her success down to her determination to succeed, her great customer service and the fact that she offers a personal Gift Wrapping Service, which means customers can send gifts direct, hassle-free, which is ideal for her many overseas customers or those who don't like to wrap gifts. “I think many Mums lose their identity and their confidence when they stay at home with the children and they don’t realise that they are gaining new skills that can be useful when they want to go back to work” says our Mumpreneur. “I used to own a pub, so this was very different and I have never designed a website before or knew much about html code so it’s been a very steep learning curve, but I did it. It’s not perfect yet, but that’s more to do with the restrictions of the software that I bought, than my ability. I am currently on page 1 of Google for ‘Gifts by Post’ and last year I was shortlisted for the Home Workers Awards which gave my confidence a big boost, so I am proud of my achievements and my business is still growing steadily each month.” “I network with a lot of women from all over the world and it always amazes me how they are achieving great things, while looking after their families,” she continues. “In 2007 it was estimated that 22m people shopped online and it was expected to increase to 32m by 2011, but even with the current economic climate I am still positive and online trade is growing faster than high street retailers at the moment. You don’t have to be a retailer though. Many women are creating some fantastic innovative new products which they are promoting to suppliers, some even dealing direct with China. So I would say to all women thinking about working from home, take advantage of all the free help you can get (there's loads of it out there), be prepared to put in a lot of hard work, do some thorough research and probably pick something that would be achievable in a recession. Do that, then set yourself some goals so you have something to aim for, because if you don’t know what you are aiming for, how are you going to get there? Then I would say ‘go for it girls!’ ”

This intel is a definite 5, Helena. I,ve been away for awhile, so missed this when it was published. There are many stay at home dads, senior citizens, and persons with physical disabilities who can also benefit from your advise. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
